One of the largest floating communities in Siem Reap is distracted by the daily lives of locals who engage primarily in fishing and agriculture. PREK TOAL BIRD SANCTUARY

Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary is Cambodia’s most important waterbird reserve, located on the northwest edge of Tonlé Sap Lake near Siem Reap. It is internationally recognized for hosting Southeast Asia’s largest colonies of rare and endangered waterbirds, best viewed during the dry season (December–March).

  • Location: Northwestern Tonlé Sap Lake, within the Tonlé Sap Biosphere Reserve, about 1.5–2 hours by boat from Siem Reap.
  • Size: Roughly 120 square miles of flooded forest and wetlands.
  • Importance: One of the most critical breeding sites for large waterbirds in Southeast Asia.
  • Over 150 bird species have been recorded here, including globally threatened species.
  • Access: From Siem Reap, drive to Chong Kneas or Kompong Phluk pier, then take a boat (1.5–2 hours).
  • Best Season: Dry months (December–March) when water levels drop and birds gather in nesting colonies.
